Modern civilization is often described as an information economy.
We celebrate software, artificial intelligence, financial markets, and digital platforms. Headlines focus on trillion-dollar technology companies and the remarkable pace of innovation. It is easy to believe that physical industry has become secondary, that advanced economies have somehow evolved beyond factories, machine tools, and manufacturing.
That belief is increasingly proving to be an illusion.
Every breakthrough in artificial intelligence still requires semiconductor fabrication plants. Every electric vehicle requires refined metals and advanced manufacturing. Every data center depends upon transformers, switchgear, cooling systems, concrete, steel, and skilled labor. For much of the past three decades, developed nations pursued efficiency above nearly every other objective. The system worked remarkably well, until it didn't.
The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities few policymakers had fully appreciated. Critical medical supplies became scarce. Semiconductor shortages halted automobile production. Shipping costs surged. Supply chains that had been optimized for efficiency proved surprisingly fragile under stress.
What had once been considered an economic issue suddenly became a matter of national security.
The lesson extended far beyond healthcare.
Governments began asking uncomfortable questions.
What happens if geopolitical tensions interrupt the supply of advanced chips? What happens if access to critical minerals is restricted? What happens if a nation loses the ability to manufacture transformers, machine tools, or precision components needed for both civilian infrastructure and national defense?
These are no longer hypothetical concerns.
Around the world, governments are investing heavily to rebuild industrial capacity. Semiconductor fabrication facilities are being constructed domestically. Shipyards are expanding. Defense production is accelerating. Grid infrastructure is being modernized. Nuclear energy is returning to national conversations. Advanced manufacturing incentives are replacing decades of industrial complacency.
This is not protectionism for its own sake.
It is strategic resilience.
The objective is no longer simply to produce goods at the lowest possible cost. It is to ensure that essential capabilities remain available during periods of disruption.
Industry has once again become strategy.
Artificial intelligence accelerates this trend rather than replacing it.
Modern factories increasingly resemble technology companies. Robotics, machine vision, automation, predictive maintenance, digital twins, and AI-driven quality control are transforming manufacturing into one of the most sophisticated sectors of the global economy.
The factory of tomorrow will not necessarily employ more people than the factory of yesterday.
It will simply produce far more with fewer resources, greater precision, and unprecedented efficiency.
The countries that successfully combine abundant electricity, advanced manufacturing, technological innovation, and industrial policy will possess significant structural advantages for decades to come.
This is why electricity, discussed in Part II, becomes so essential.
Electricity powers industry.
Industry transforms electricity into productive capacity. Productive capacity creates economic strength.
Investors should view today's announcements of new semiconductor facilities, transmission projects, advanced manufacturing campuses, defense expansion, and industrial reshoring not as isolated headlines, but as pieces of a much larger structural transformation.
The world is quietly rebuilding the physical foundations of the new system of prosperity.
The next industrial era will not simply reward those who invent the future.
It will reward those who possess the capacity to build it.
